Effectiveness Evaluations in Health: The Dilemmas of Community-Governed Initiatives (06) [EN]

Dr. Javier Mignone, Assistant Professor, University of Manitoba

3 juin 2007, 9 h 00 - 16 h 00 - Intermediate - 15 places

This workshop will use examples from several initiatives in Latin America of community-governed health organizations, in most cases of Indigenous organizations, to examine a number of issues as they relate to the evaluation of their programs. Workshop participants will analyze specific cases focusing on several areas, such as: the paradox of requesting a higher burden of proof of effectiveness to organizations with minimal data infrastructure; the different evaluation agendas between community organizations and donors; dilemmas in the formulation of effectiveness studies involving traditional Indigenous practices and intercultural health; evaluation designs for community-governed health care distinguishing between adequacy, plausibility and probability assessments; knowledge as power and power as knowledge; health care evaluation as a phronetic social science. This one-day workshop will include brief lectures on aspects of the above mentioned topics as well as hands-on group work analyzing and debate specific cases and issues.
